What Is Homeopathy and How Does It Work?
From Pakistan to Mississauga & Toronto
Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine developed in the late 1700s. It is based on two main ideas:
- “Like cures like” – a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person is believed to help relieve similar symptoms in a sick person when given in very small amounts.
- Extreme dilution – homeopathic remedies are made by repeatedly diluting a natural substance (such as a plant, mineral, or animal product) and shaking it in a process called succussion. Many remedies are diluted so much that little or none of the original substance remains.
How Homeopathy Is Believed to Work
Homeopathy focuses on the idea that the body has its own natural ability to heal. Practitioners choose remedies based on a person’s full picture of symptoms—physical, emotional, and mental. The highly diluted remedies are believed by practitioners to:
- Gently stimulate the body’s self-healing processes
- Help restore balance and well-being
- Support the individual as a whole, rather than only treating one symptom
While many people use homeopathy and some report personal benefits, scientific research has not been able to show clear evidence that homeopathic remedies work beyond a placebo effect. Because of the high dilution, the remedies usually do not contain measurable amounts of the original substance.
Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe because they are highly diluted. However, they should not replace medical treatment for serious or urgent health conditions.
