The Power of Hijama: A Prophetic Cure for Every Disease

In Cupping (Hijama) There Is a Cure and A Blessing

Discover the profound benefits of Hijama (cupping), a revered practice in Prophetic medicine. The Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized its healing power, stating, “Healing is in three things: in the incision of the cupper, in drinking honey, and in cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my Ummah (nation) from cauterization (branding with fire).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5681), Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3491)]. This highlights the significance of Hijama as a therapeutic method.

Further emphasizing the efficacy of Hijama, Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) as saying, “Indeed in cupping (Hijama) there is a cure.” [Saheeh Muslim (5706)].

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, “Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. In it are a cure and a blessing…” [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3487)].

* ‘alaa ar-reeq in Arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

The Optimal Time for Hijama: A Cure for Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)]. This indicates the importance of timing in maximizing the benefits of Hijama.

Al Hijamah (Cupping Therapy) stands as the best remedy recommended and practiced by the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him). He said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is Hijama (Cupping)[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]. Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) also mentioned that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, “Oh Muhammad (peace be upon him), order your Ummah (nation) with Hijama (Cupping).”[Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]. This underscores the profound significance and excellence of this Sunnah.

Exploring Principles of Traditional Healing Methods

This section delves into the foundational principles shared by various traditional healing methods, including cupping (Hijama) and acupuncture. These ancient systems often view health as a state of balance within the body’s vital energies and acknowledge its inherent capacity for self-healing.

The Concept of Energy Flow

Many traditional healing modalities emphasize the importance of unimpeded energy flow within the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this energy is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). It is believed to circulate through specific pathways called meridians. Similarly, other traditions recognize vital life forces that need to flow freely for optimal health. When this energy becomes stagnant or blocked, it can lead to pain, discomfort, and disease. Therapies like acupuncture aim to stimulate specific points along these meridians to restore the harmonious flow of energy.

Vital Forces and the Body’s Wisdom

Beyond energy flow, traditional systems often recognize inherent vital forces that govern bodily functions and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. This concept acknowledges the body’s intelligence and its continuous efforts to maintain equilibrium. Treatments like Hijama (cupping) can be seen as assisting these vital forces by removing obstacles, such as stagnant blood and toxins, thereby allowing the body to function more effectively and promote its own healing processes.

Holistic Approach to Health

A defining characteristic of traditional healing methods is their holistic approach. They typically consider the individual as a whole – encompassing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects – rather than focusing solely on isolated symptoms. Lifestyle factors, such as diet, stress levels, and environmental influences, are often considered integral to both the cause and the treatment of illness. Cupping, for example, while directly addressing physical stagnation, can also have a positive impact on mental and emotional well-being by promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

Shared Principles, Diverse Practices

While specific techniques and terminologies may differ across various traditional healing systems, the underlying principles often share common ground. The emphasis on restoring balance, facilitating the body’s natural healing abilities, and adopting a holistic perspective unites practices like Hijama, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and traditional massage therapies. Understanding these foundational principles provides a deeper appreciation for the wisdom inherent in these time-tested approaches to health and wellness.
